Celebrating student's learning

Top 6 highlights from week 4, 2019.

1. Maths: Number and place value- Counting
  • During last week students worked in small groups or with a partner to solve problems and answer inquiry questions. Our focus continued on place value and skip counting. We played games (sort and fill in the missing numbers), and created a place value house. Students participated in ''Tug of War''( I love maths- I'm not a big fan of math) and reflected on their understanding of place value concept.

I have 24, who has 14 ...
This game was part of my formative assessment.

Students exploring the concept of place value using different tools and strategies.

Inquiry questions and Tug of War.

Analysing, applying and sharing knowledge.

2. Language
  • Last week students started to work on Words their way, finished first writing sample and took part in guided reading.
  • Words their way help students grow their vocabulary and develop their spelling skills in a way that caters for their differentiated learning needs. We are using teacher-directed activities and student-centred approach. Those activities help students to engage in a variety of sound, pattern and meaning activities, by sorting pictures and words.
  • Personal Narrative Writing Sample. Students began to plan a story of a special time, next they wrote a draft of a story and on Friday, they edited and revised their work using pictures and text.
  • To assess student writing we are using 6+plus 1 traits of writing. The Six Traits of writing are Voice, Ideas, Presentation, Conventions, Organization, Word Choice, and Sentence Fluency. Teachers use these Traits to help students learn the specific skills necessary to make their writing really work.
  1. Ideas: The meaning and development of the message.
  2. Organization: The internal structure of the piece.
  3. Voice: The way the writer brings the topic to life.
  4. Word Choice: The specific vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning.
  5. Sentence Fluency: The way the words and phrases flow throughout the text.
  6. Conventions: The mechanical correctness of the piece.
  7. Presentation: The overall appearance of the work.

Guided reading is always fun. Teacher's role is simple, we support and guide students during reading and help them use different strategies to read the text.

3. MAP practice
  • Language (Reading) will take on Monday 9 September and Math on Monday 16 September. Please let me know if you have any questions.

4. W.O.R.D.
  • I'm happy to see that students are improving communication skills during W.O.R.D. time. Last Tuesday, we were reading 'Finding Nemo' and students showed engagement and enthusiasm for the story. Afterwards, we still had time for individual reading. Parents are welcome to come and read to us next week (Thursday 12 September @12:15)

5. UOI
  • During our inquiry time, students shared information about Well-being, inquired into the concept of connection (How is it connected with other things?) and learned about breathing techniques.
Some of the inquiry questions:
What is well-being?
What are some of the things that keep us well?
What did you pick up from the pictures?
What do you do during the first break, second break?
What makes us happy?
How can we be happy, healthy and wholesome?

Students are showing great responsibilities by following our requirements for Healthy Lunch Box on Wednesday.

Thank you to Ms Jacky (Ines's mom) for introducing to us important breathing techniques. It was a lot of fun!

Sharing time in 2B!
It was the physical aspect/factor of well- being.

6. Reflection (Discussion dice)
  • Reflection is part of our daily routines. Sometimes we play games, other time we fill in an exit slip, sometimes we just share our thoughts and concerns.
  • This time I would like to share with you an example of a game. Students worked in small groups. Each student had a chance to roll a dice and ask a friend a question, for example, what did you learn new today? what did you find challenging?  An important thing to remember is...
  • During this activity, students used communication and social skills.

Have a lovely weekend!

Grade 1 visited Grade 2 today

and Students from EY3 visited Grade 1

Today we had a very exciting day full of interesting activities.

We started the day by setting a happy tone to our learning.
What would make you smile:))today?
Those are the student's answers:

  • break
  • friends
  • puzzle
  • play all day
  • no learning today
  • challenge
  • art

Our next activity was finding out - What does it mean thinking outside the box?
Students formed two circles, each student faced another student. Some students asked questions some answered.
What does it mean to think outside the box?

After a warm discussion, we said it's time to think outside THE BOX MONDAY!

Complete the picture ...It's not a fish ...
and create glasses using paper. Those are the two task students had to complete.

Students divided themselves into 3 groups.
Our first group joined Open Inquiry where students could direct their own learning entirely independently.
The second group joined Guided Inquiry, where the teacher guided the students and encouraged them to dig deeper with their observations. The last group was part of Structured Inquiry which identifies students who are less confident and less inclined to take initiative. On the end of the activities, students were engaged and have shown creative thinking and independence.

Great creation !!!

It was a great Monday...
