We are coming to the end of Unit 2. Students were working on different projects to support their thinking. We read two very interesting books. One of them was 'The Giving Tree' and the other book called 'The Lorax'.

Students created the Eco-system, where living things and non-living things are depending on each other. Based on the Eco-system, students discussed interdependence between plants and humans.

This what the students said about: Plants depend on...

  • people/humans- Madeline and Japie
  • water -Zara
  • soil/food -David and Aishe
  • sun, water , shade and food- Evandro
  • care -humans should take of them- Gabriel
and who/what depends on plants?...

  • shops- Zara
  • chickens- Aishe
  • people -Japie
  • gardeners- Evandro
  • farmers -David
  • animals

Students made a connection with the unit and understand that there should be a balance.

  • Evandro said:'We only use half of the trees to make a paper and the other half can give us air'.
  • Lauren 'wants to keep the forest safe and she wants to be like The Lorax'
  • Aishe and Madeline said :'We need shelter /homes, so we need wood to make it.'
  • Beritha - 'we need medicine '
  • Ohole - 'we need trees to make many things'

Looking after the tomato plants wasn't a very easy job to do. Students shared their observation and facts.

Here are some of the student's reflections.

'I gave my plant to much water'- Gabriel

'My plant was eaten by ants'- Beritha

'My plant had too much sunlight'- Popyeni

'My plant died because I forgot about it, I was in Swakopmund.' -Evandro.

'My plant had not enough water '- David

'I did everything that the plant needed but still died and I don't know why?' - Lauren

Looks like few of our students have green fingers and the tomato plant is still growing. Congratulation to Azmat, Amauro, Cayden, and Zara for looking after your plant so good.

Our big idea is to use plants wisely and be an example to others by looking after the environment. - Grade 1B
